Japan motorcycle trip gear checklist
When you rent a motorcycle in Japan you can bring your own helmet or reserve one in your size, and you must wear proper riding gear on pick-up day. Here is what to bring, what you can rent, and what each item costs.

What you must wear at pick-up
On the day of rental, besides your passport and driving licences, you must wear appropriate motorcycling gear, including but not limited to a helmet, anti-fall jacket, anti-fall trousers and motorcycle boots.
Helmet: bring your own or rent?
Either works. Your own helmet fits you best; to rent one, choose a full-face or open-face helmet on the rental booking form and enter your size.

Worth bringing on a long trip
From June 2025, the roadside assistance included with voluntary insurance no longer covers tyre repair or a dead battery — the bike is towed to a nearby repair shop instead. For long or long-term trips, we recommend carrying your own tyre repair kit and a portable jump starter.
