Ride Guide

ETC

ETC is Japan's wireless electronic toll system, letting you pass toll gates on the expressway without stopping.

What is ETC?

ETC stands for Electronic Toll Collection system, a wireless payment system used on Japanese highways that lets drivers cross toll lanes without stopping. It consists of an ETC card reader, an ETC card and an ETC indicator light: simply insert the card into the dedicated reader, and if the indicator shows a continuous green flash, the ETC system is working normally.

Motorcycles under 125cc cannot be driven on highways, so the ETC system cannot be installed on them.

How to use ETC

  1. When you reach the expressway toll gate, pull into the ETC lane.
  2. No need to stop — just drive slowly down the middle of the blue line (less than 20 km/h).
  3. Once the gate opens, drive slowly out of the toll booth.

Renting ETC at Rental819

Most vehicles rented at Rental819 are already fitted with the ETC system; you only need to rent an ETC card to use it. At the time of rental, you can check whether the vehicle has an ETC system and whether the branch has an ETC card available.

Please indicate on the rental form that you need to rent an ETC card, and our staff will arrange a shop that can lend one and confirm the vehicle is fitted with the system. On the rental day, besides the vehicle rent you also pay the ETC card rental of 220 yen per day. When returning the bike, settle the highway tolls at the same time; a late return incurs an additional late fee.

Precautions when using an ETC card

  • When passing a toll gate, keep your distance from the vehicle ahead and drive slowly to avoid a collision.
  • Keep your distance from other vehicles, travel at under 20 km/h and 5 metres behind the vehicle in front, and pass straight through the gate.
  • Do not overtake within the ETC lane.
  • If the ETC lane malfunctions or the gate fails to open, leave the lane carefully and watch for vehicles behind you.
  • After leaving, inform the toll staff as soon as possible so you can park safely and wait for instructions.
  • Do not reverse, make a U-turn, or move to another lane.
  • If there is no ETC lane available, or you cannot exit via ETC, use a regular toll gate and show your ETC card to the staff.
