What is ETC?

ETC refers to the Electronic Toll Collection system.

This wireless payment system used on Japanese highways allows drivers to cross toll lanes without stopping.

Simply insert the ETC card into the dedicated card reader, and if the indicator light on the vehicle shows a continuous green flash, the ETC system is operating normally.

Please note that since motorcycles under 125cc cannot be driven on highways, the ETC system cannot be installed.

How to use ETC

When you arrive at the expressway toll gate, please pull into the ETC lane (see sign).

Rent ETC at Rental819

Most of the vehicles rented in Rental 819 are already equipped with the ETC system, you only need to rent an ETC card to use the system.

You can check if the vehicle is equipped with an ETC system and whether the branch has an ETC card available for rent at the time of rental.

Procedures for renting and returning ETC cards

Please indicate that you need to rent an ETC card when filling out the rental form, and our customer service staff will arrange for you to arrange a shop where you can rent an ETC card, as well as confirm that the vehicle you want to rent is equipped with an ETC system.

On the day of rental, in addition to the rental of the vehicle, you will also have to pay the rental fee of the ETC card. The fee is 200 yen per day.

Precautions for renting an ETC card

If you have successfully reserved a vehicle with an ETC system installed and an ETC card, our staff will pre-install the ETC card for you when you rent the vehicle and ensure the normal operation of the system through the ETC indicator light.

Precautions regarding the use of ETC cards

When passing toll gates, keep your distance from the vehicle in front and drive slowly to prevent collisions with the vehicle in front.
If there is not only one vehicle on the ETC lane or it is not in the middle (e.g. two vehicles in parallel, overtaking the vehicle in front, etc.), it may cause the ETC system to not operate normally and cause serious traffic accidents. So keep your distance from other vehicles at a speed of less than 20 km/h and keep a distance of 5 metres from the vehicle in front of you and pass through the toll gate in a straight line.
In the ETC lane, it is not past the car in front.
If the ETC lane does not operate normally or the gate fails to open, please be careful to leave the lane and pay attention to the vehicles behind you to avoid accidents.
After leaving, please inform the toll booth staff as soon as possible so that you can park your vehicle in a safe environment and wait for further instructions.
Please do not turn backwards, U-turn, or move to another lane.
If there is no ETC lane to pass, or if you are not able to exit the ETC, please use the regular toll gate and show your ETC card to the staff.
